Software Engineer, Backend (APIs / Databases / Cloud Services)

■Department Mission
Prudential Japan is building a new Product Engineering organization as part of its Technology Transformation. We build and operate digital products supporting the life insurance journey, from application and underwriting to servicing and claims. Our mission is to own these systems as long-lived products and establish strong engineering standards.

■Position Highlights
・Join a new team and help establish engineering practices.
・Write production code in your first few months.
・Work on critical systems supporting long-term customer obligations.
・No insurance or professional experience required. You will learn with support from a mentor and lead.
・Work with AWS, AI-assisted development, and both English and Japanese.

■Responsibilities
・Backend Development: Build, test and ship backend services and APIs.
・Data Modelling: Design data models for long-lived, accurate records.
・External Integration: Integrate with banking, government and industry systems.
・Batch Processing: Build and operate scheduled and periodic processing.
・Audit: Maintain reliable records of key transactions and actions.
・Legacy Systems: Work with existing systems and determine when to retain, wrap or replace them.
・Quality: Participate in code reviews and automated testing.
・Production: Deploy safely, monitor systems and gradually join on-call support.
・AI Assisted Engineering: Use AI for coding, testing and investigation while understanding its limitations.

・Policy Administration: Safely modify insurance product calculations.
・Customer Communications: Build services delivering required customer notices.
・Policy Issuance: Support applications from submission through underwriting and issuance.
・Integration: Connect with banking, government and industry services.
・CRM: Keep customer and agent information consistent across channels.

■Nice to Have
・Interest in system reliability and problem detection.
・Programming fundamentals in at least one language.
・Knowledge of relational databases and SQL.
・Experience using Git.
・Fluent to native-level English and working-level Japanese or above.
・Degree completed or expected in a relevant field; computer science is not required.

■Preferred Qualifications
・Experience with Java, Kotlin, Go, Python, or TypeScript/Node through study, internships or projects.
・Exposure to AWS, Azure or GCP.
・Experience with PostgreSQL or another relational database.
・Familiarity with REST, event-driven integration, CI/CD, Terraform or CDK.
・Experience or interest in regulated or high-consequence systems.
